Hooded Sweatshirts and Their History

Published on April 21 2014

Hooded Sweatshirts are also called Hoodies by many. We all know what sweatshirts are. But very few of us know the history of the sweatshirts. The basic function of the sweatshirts is simple. They have a hood built right at the top. There is a string to pull and adjust the hood. You will find a nice zipper vertically going through the hood and the sweatshirt to tie them together. Nice mechanism indeed as it combines the cap with the jacket. It became popular much later than its first introduction and now people of all ages use the hoody.

The origin of Hooded Sweatshirts or hoodies go back a long way. The hoodies were worn by the monks. These monks used to wear cowls to cover up their heads and used to attach the cowls with robes. The Hoodies were first produced commercially by “Champion” in 1930’s in USA. At that time the hoodies were not so popular. The main purpose of producing the clothing range was for the laborers who worked in tough and freezing conditions at that time. Slowly the hoodies became a part of the mainstream fashion. It happened almost 30 years later from when they were first produced.

You will find that the hooded sweatshirts became popular during the 70’s. Many think that the hoodies were popular at that time thanks to the Hip Hop Craze that took the country by storm. The dress gave the wearer anonymity instantly. So, it became easier for men with criminal intent to commit a crime then disappear completely wearing the cool hoodies. But the biggest boom for the hoodie was when it was taken as a style statement by famous dress designers. For many, the Sylvester Stallone film “Rocky” contributed to the popularity of the dress in a huge way.

Hooded Sweatshirts rose at the peak of the popularity during the 90’s. The popular brands like Armani, Tommy Hilfiger and others adopted hoodie as a style statement. Giorgio Armani, Tony Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren are a few personalities among many to adopt hooded shirts into their collection. Thus, rapidly hoodie spread through the nation and became a priceless possession in one’s wardrobe. The hoodies became part of academic dress-code; there were hoodies with academic logos inscribed within them. That shows how much of a style statement those sweatshirts had become. Many young people accepted hoodie and began to sport it ever since.

From the American cold regions to Rocky Balboa, a film character; hoodies traveled their distance to be famous.
